Chamber Music for Strings

For Advanced High School and College-Age Players. Ages 14-24.

June 13 – July 4, 2010

The chamber music program for talented young string players and pianists at Madeline Island Music Camp was founded in 1986.  Over 25 years the Camp has refined its curriculum to offer a truly exceptional program devoted exclusively to the study and performance of chamber music.  Forty-eight outstanding young musicians aged 14-24 are grouped according to age and ability into chamber ensembles to receive daily coaching by faculty such as the Arianna, Jupiter and Fry Street String Quartets, and other distinguished artists from the Manhattan School of Music, University of Iowa, the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, University of Wisconsin, University of Michigan, University of Northern Iowa, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and Minnesota Orchestra.

In addition to coaching, students spend three hours each day in chamber music rehearsal and two hours in solo practice.  Students also receive one private lesson and one semi-private lesson (lst with 2nd violin, viola with cello) each week as additional preparation for the public performances, attended by enthusiastic and supportive audiences, every weekend.  Master classes, lecture/demonstrations, and six performances by the faculty also take place.  While the Camp  program is rigorous, the focus remains on learning and fulfilling potential.  Students experience not only the richness of performing music at their highest level, but form lifelong friendships.  Ample time is available for students to enjoy a wide variety of recreational activities (ping pong, tennis, movies, enjoying Madeline Island's beautiful beaches).  Advanced groups may also go on short local tours to perform.  Apply Now!

“MIMC provided a solid foundation of knowledge for chamber music.  Working with professional quartets was amazing.”
